Arkham Horror: The Card Game
Based on the Cthulhu Mythos developed by popular horror fiction writer, H.P. Lovecraft, Arkham Horror is a cooperative game in which the players solve the mystery and defeat the monsters. There is a heavy theme of the Call of the Cthulhu roleplay game running throughout Arkham Horror, adding to the feel of the Lovecraftian world.
The gameplay involves collecting clues and using them to progress through the story. This is done by using the Act deck, which act as narrative cards. There are also Agenda cards, which will hamper you. The idea is to advance the characters at a faster pace through the Act cards and go forward before the Agenda cards put an obstacle on your path.
The players learn the story as they progress through the game and there are unlimited surprises in store. But what to do once the story is already learned? The replayability value of the game is limited since it does progress through a fixed path. However, Fantasy Flight Games has released several expansions to the game, and there are more coming every month. This provides space for new stories to be told, thus increasing the playability of the game.
The game was released in October 2016 by Fantasy Flight Games during Arkham Night, and proved to be immensely popular right away, immediately selling out completely. It was even leaked in May 2016 before its release. The game turned out to be as good as was anticipated by gaming buffs. It won the Golden Geek Awards in several categories.
Arkham Horror was designed by Nate French and Matthew Newman, while a number of artists, including Ignacio Bazán Lazcano and Henning Ludvigsen, illustrated the beautiful cards. The illustrations give a great feel of the Lovecraft horror world and are a great incentive for new players to try out this game. If you are a horror fan, then this is just the game for you!
