Chocobo Crystal Hunt
Chocobo’s Crystal Hunt is a cute game released in 2016 by Square Enix. The game requires the players to send chocobos out to steal crystals from their opponents. Just be aware that the opponents are trying to do the same thing! Also try to avoid the bombs and monsters while your chocobos are out hunting.
The game is based on the Japanese Final Fantasy video game series, in which chocobos were originally introduced. These creatures are basically birds who are friendly and can be domesticated. Some can fly and others are good in battle. But all these characteristics don’t really show up in the board game much, and the presence of chocobos is basically to capitalise on their cuteness. The original video game series was much more complicated, but this spin-off board game is directed more towards young children. The publisher for both is however the same.
Chocobo’s Crystal Hunt is very short and accommodates up to 3 to 5 players. The game comes with 14 chocobo cards, 5 fat chocobo cards, 12 crystal cards, and 8 monster cards. 5 player markers and 5 victory tokens are also provided. The game begins with each player being given a chocobo and two cards. On their turn, they draw a card, and use the chocobos to hunt for crystals. The game is finished with any player collects one crystal of each element or a total of six crystals. The gameplay barely lasts for 20 minutes and appears to be most suitable for young children or as a filler game. It is also a must-buy for die-hard fans of the Final Fantasy series.
One of the redeeming features of this uncomplicated mini-game is the lovely artwork. Providing a very old-style design, the illustrations are reminiscent of the 90s. The delicate designs too makes the game worth a purchase, if only for collecting the cards!
