Game of Thrones Board Game
It should not be surprising to anyone that the Game of Thrones board game is as exciting as the GoT books or the TV show. A strategy based roleplay game in which the players represent the different houses of Westeros, the basic aim of the Game of Thrones game is to capture the Iron Throne by building up an army, securing allies, and strategizing relationships with other players – in short, typical of what you would expect from Game of Thrones.
Though the game was originally based on the first book, Game of Thrones, the expansions have some elements from the later books, A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords. It was first released in 2003, and the expansions came out in 2004 and 2006 respectively. In 2011, a second edition of the game was released, containing some minor changes and an updated board and new graphics, as well as a redesigned map. This edition also contained expansions from A Dance with Dragons and A Feast for Crows.
The game is designed for three to six players, and the expansion has allowed the addition of an extra player in the form of House Martell. Each player receives an army and a deck of House cards, based on which you can plan out your battles. The game consists of many rounds, and each round has three phases: Westeros, Planning and Action. The first phase deals with the daily activities in the kingdom. The second phase allows you to assign secret orders while the action phase is the actual battle phase. To bring an element of unpredictability to the game, Tides of Battle Cards are provided. These cards offer advantages and disadvantages to the player in the form of weather conditions, tactical opportunities and the morale of the army.
The board game has won several Origin Awards, one of America’s premier awards for games. A challenging and engrossing game, Game of Thrones offers hours of exciting roleplay. Though easy to learn, it is difficult to master, making it an excellent choice for board gamers of all levels.
